This lively group of artists, led by Mike Glanville and based at Salcombe Art Club, started ten years ago with a converted mangle and a willingness to embark on an experimental, creative journey. Later an etching press was added, and the group has continued to flourish, attracting new members, and introducing printmaking to a new local audience. Through the autumn and winter months, the printmaking group meets each week to develop individual and group projects using a wide range of relief and intaglio techniques, in a mutually supportive and creative environment. When the Loft Studio is transformed for Salcombe Art Club's summer exhibition, members of the group continue to gather and work in each others' studios or gardens, or organise outings to places of interest to draw, paint and, on occasion, even print in the open air on a small, portable etching press. As a result, the spirit of the group permeates this annual exhibition of members' work, linking the work through more than technique alone. This year's exhibition at Harbour House includes lino and wood cuts, drypoints, etchings and collagraphs, and monoprints and monotypes. Members of Press Gang will be in the gallery throughout, and will be happy to explain and demonstrate how printing plates are made, and how with each different technique the ink is transferred from plate to paper, creating an original work of art. The artists will also show paintings and mixed media works.
