10am - 4pm Informal Gallery Talk: Thursday 20 November at 12 noon
Paul Hannon's semi-abstract mixed media paintings explore the physical and spiritual themes of human existence. Intrigued by the circumstances, encounters and opportunities that effect and shape a journey through life, he uses subdued colours and a restricted palette to give a dreamlike, and occasionally a nightmarish, quality to his paintings. A small motif, or a mere suggestion of narrative, allows the viewer to make personal interpretations of the work and to respond intuitively on a journey which can be ambiguous, spiritual, meditative and, at times, challenging. Paul often works in series, finding that one image can rarely offer a solution to a complex train of thought. "To this end, I deliberately dissect the constituent parts that make up an experience, ultimately presenting these as several inextricably linked interpretations. I work to the philosophy that an artist's reach should always exceed his grasp, and to this end I constantly strive for freshness and honesty."
