My body is the starting point for my work, and through my art I aim to offer a respect and acceptance of the female body.
With advertising promoting the perfect body, and the lure of technology leading to further disembodiment, I am committed
to cherishing the body for itself, as the given place we live in, rather than a site to remake, modify or standardise.
Caroline was for many years a movement artist, but felt over time an increasing need to be able to see and reflect on her own work,
work which extended the metaphor of her own body. She began by body casting her torso in plaster.
As a movement practitioner, I know the body does not lie,
and in this case, neither does plaster, which shows every detail of my ageing skin.
Caroline has made a series of casts in different materials, including resin, teabags, cloth, sanitary towels, and found pottery shards.
The gathering of elements, and assembling them to make a whole, represents a return to a more whole embodied state.
My aim in my work is to convey art that strips away the glossing over of women's physical truth,
and celebrate who we are, as we are.
My Body, My Self includes Caroline's paintings and body casts, and selected works by Cea Blyth, Tati Dennehy and Eliza Jacobs.
Cea Blyth works on hemp canvas with earth pigments in gum arabic, and shows a series of torso prints
involving Yoga Dance, which she describes as "painting with the body of the Earth with my body."
Tati Dennehy's sculptures are coil-built, and explore the human form and its connections to nature, feeling
and relationship, portraying the vulnerability and wonder of the human condition with reverence and humour.
Eliza Jacobs' paintings and collage are primarily concerned with energy and presence, explored through music and dance.
