What does it mean to be human?

Much modern and contemporary art is concerned with exploring this theme, and Harbour House invites you to share your thoughts and investigations in the second of this year's Open Art Exhibitions.

It's a chance to really explore what it means to be a social, spiritual, human being. Your work could take any form, and need not necessarily include figures or faces. It could be a direct, emotional response, or could equally be inspired by philosophy, psychology, literature, art, music or religion.

Save life drawing, anatomy and portraiture for another exhibition, unless the intrinsic thinking behind the work truly involves an analysis of what it means to be human.

What would help our selectors, then, would be a few sentences explaining the thinking behind the work, so do bear this in mind as you embark on your creative journey.

I shut my eyes in order to see.
Paul Gauguin

We are not human beings trying to be spiritual. We are spiritual beings trying to be human.
Jacquelyn Small

There is only one journey. Going inside yourself.
Rainer Maria Rilke
